Shipyard Black IPA
The brewmasters at Shipyard just celebrated their 20th Anniversary up in Portland, Maine. Fred Forsley and Alan Pugsley now distribute their craft beer in all 50 states and have achieved the ranking of the 14th largest craft brewery in the country. The American Black IPA is starting to be one of my new favorites and has had a recent surge in popularity. The Shipyard version is a fall and winter seasonal that was started in 2013. They combine the crispy pine notes of American northwest hops (Nugget, Simcoe, Chinook, and Citra) with a rich full bodied malty dark ale. They use 2-Row British Pale Ale, Munich, Brown, Whole Wheat, Black Prinz, and Chocolate for the malt character and the fermentation is done with a Top-Fermenting English yeast. The result is a dark black full bodied beer that will please IPA and Stout fans worldwide!
